Alternate timelines are a one in a trillion chance of happening. Normally, when someone with the power of time travel travels backwards through time, they are already part of history. Sometimes, though, when an individual of extreme power travels through time without proper knowledge they can cause a temporal distortion.

Normally this would just kill the person, but sometimes they are still sent back. Causing a extremely large power discharge and sending them spiraling back in time. This creates a wound in time and to fix the wound a Alternate timeline is created and the individual is placed in it, forever lost from their original time. These timelines are extremely unstable also and will eventually collapse when time catches up to its original point when the individual traveled back.
